Mumbai Indians ended their four-match losing streak by blazing to a 99-run win over Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in Ahmedabad on Monday night.
Tilak Varma’s career-best 101 not out saw MI surge back into the contest, reaching 199 for five despite Kagiso Rabada’s three-wicket Power Play burst.
Ashwani Kumar then dismantled the Titans' middle order to finish with 4-24, helping to wrap up the win at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Jasprit Bumrah struck at the first opportunity of the Titans' reply, having Sai Sudharsan caught in the ring, before Jos Buttler was pinned LBW by Hardik Pandya to make it 5 for two.
Shubman Gill fell next, holing out to Naman Dhir to bring impact replacement Ashwani into the wicket straight away.
Then Naman excelled himself, clinging on two-handed above his head while just staying inside the boundary rope to end Washington Sundar’s 17-ball 26.
It was Mitchell Santner’s first wicket, and he had his second two balls later - fellow New Zealander Glenn Phillips caught and bowled as the Titans continued to disintegrate.
Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Rabada - stumped by Quinton de Kock - and Mohammed Siraj all failed to make a mark as MI cruised to success.
Rabada had earlier ripped apart the Mumbai top order.
De Kock was the middle of the trio of victims and was unable to repeat his century-making exploits of last Thursday, instead chipping his rushed shot back to Rabada to depart for 13.
Danish Malewar had already seen his debut with the bat come to a rapid end, stone dead LBW, but Rabada’s third was the most spectacular, splattering the stumps of Suryakumar Yadav to leave MI 46 for three at the end of the Power Play.
He even managed an assist to break the nagging partnership between Naman and Tilak, catching the former in the deep for a well-made 45 off 32 balls as Prasidh Krishna took his first.
Tilak reached his half-century off 33 deliveries with his third maximum of the evening, making the dream start to the 18th over.
It became a nightmare for Ashok Sharma - taken for 26 runs by the 23-year-old, before exacting some sort of revenge when his final ball struck Tilak flush in the unmentionables.
But his acceleration was perfect and he had just enough time to reach three figures off the final ball of the innings, with a staggering 96 coming from the last six overs to set up a desperately needed victory.
