Royal Challengers Bengaluru closed a dominant powerplay at 71 without loss after Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field first in the Indian Premier League clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
What followed was a six-over exhibition of intent and execution, with the opening pair immediately seizing control and refusing to let the bowlers settle.
Trent Boult found early movement under lights, but Virat Kohli snuffed out the threat with trademark poise, punctuating the first over with a wristy six. Phil Salt matched the aggression, picking lengths quickly and piercing the infield with confidence as RCB surged to 13 without loss after the opening over and kept the tempo high against Boult and Hardik Pandya.
The pressure intensified through overs three and four. Kohli rotated strike smartly while Salt began to free his arms, taking on anything short or fractionally wide. Even Jasprit Bumrah’s pace and precision could only slow the scoring marginally, as RCB crossed 40 without loss, firmly dictating terms through clean running and controlled boundary-hitting.
The powerplay was decisively blown open in the fifth over when Salt dismantled Mitchell Santner with brutal clarity. Three consecutive sixes, followed by a four, drained any remaining momentum from Mumbai and electrified the contest early.
By the end of six overs, Salt stood unbeaten on 47 and Kohli on 22, sealing a commanding start that left RCB firmly in the driving seat.
