John Cena is stepping back onto the Grandest Stage of Them All as the host of WrestleMania 42.
The Greatest of All Time broke the news on social media that he is headed to Las Vegas. The 17-time world champion retired from in-ring competition last December after his loss to Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event but is now making his first return to WWE.
Cena represents the last unquestioned, full‑time megastar of WWE’s previous generat— an era defined by mass mainstream appeal, clear heroes and villains, and a direct connection to pop culture far outside the squared circle.
Yet Cena’s modern relationship with WWE is different. He is no longer omnipresent. When he appears, it matters.
As host, Cena becomes the event’s narrator — a trusted voice guiding fans through a weekend of high stakes, emotion, and spectacle.
It allows him to loom large without overshadowing the performers who now carry the company forward.
In that way, WrestleMania 42 feels designed not to look backward, but to contextualize where WWE stands now.
